OHANA Wheelchair Donation

Partnering with OHANA Indonesia, a women-led wheelchair organization in Indonesia, we collaborated to donate two specially adapted wheelchairs to individuals in Surabaya with immediate needs. The handover ceremony, held at our school, featured keynote speakers to raise awareness about disabilities within our community. Gratitude is extended to Ibu Made, Ibu Risna, Ms. Christina, Pak Budi, and OHANA members for their valuable contributions. Special recognition is also extended to the National Honor Society, National Junior Honor Society, and the Student Council at Surabaya Intercultural School for their generous donations, which facilitated the procurement of these essential wheelchairs.

What we have done so far

Silent Auction

Additionally, the Disability Awareness Committee has also organizd a silent auction with ABK Yayasan to sell art that kids with disabilities made, and the funding from that has helped raise significant funds to support the welfare of disabled kids in the community. Our committee has also initiated several bake sales, which have also generated considerable funding that has been donated to support the organization's various programs including donating sports equipment to local schools with disabled children, which has improved the children's access to the more limited physical activities they are able to do.

Volunteering

We engaged in two impactful volunteering excursions at Autis Harapan Bangsa, a local school dedicated to children with diverse disabilities. During our initial visit, we collaborated with the children to craft kimbab (Korean sushi rolls), providing all the necessary ingredients. On our subsequent trip, we facilitated a basic painting activity, and subsequently, donated all the art materials used. These experiences not only allowed us to contribute meaningfully to the community but also provided our students with a hands-on and interactive opportunity to better understand and connect with children facing various disabilities.

Lots of Socks

We had tremendous participations from elementary students, fostering awareness and support for World Down Syndrome Day. Organized annually on March 21st, participants worldwide don colorful and mismatched socks to symbolize the uniqueness and diversity of individuals with Down syndrome. The event serves as a powerful platform to promote inclusivity, acceptance, and understanding of people with Down syndrome, as well as to celebrate their achievements and contributions to society.
